What we do

How speech therapy works at Game Changer

Our speech therapists make communication fun. Through play, we help your child find their words, understand the world around them, and be understood by the people who love them.

Building words and language

We help children grow their expressive language — the words and sentences your child uses — starting wherever they are today. For a late-talking toddler that might mean first words and simple requests; for an older child it might mean longer sentences, storytelling and conversation. When talking is hard right now, we can also introduce tools like gestures, pictures or devices so your child always has a way to communicate.

Understanding and being understood

Communication goes both ways. We build receptive language — what your child understands, from following directions to answering questions — and we work on articulation, the clear production of speech sounds, so your child can be understood by teachers, friends and grandparents. Every plan is play-based and tuned to your child’s interests, because an engaged child makes the fastest progress.

Answers

Speech therapy questions parents ask us

At what age should my child be talking?

Many toddlers say their first words around their first birthday and start combining two words by age two. Every child is different, but if your 2-year-old isn’t using words yet, is very hard to understand, or gets frustrated trying to communicate, a speech evaluation is a smart next step — and you don’t have to wait for a diagnosis to start.

Do you evaluate before starting therapy?

Yes. We start by getting to know your child and understanding their strengths and needs, then build a plan around clear, meaningful goals. You will be part of the conversation from the very first visit.

Can speech therapy start before an autism evaluation?

Often, yes. Speech therapy does not require an autism diagnosis, so it is a great way to start helping your child while you wait on a longer evaluation. Many families begin with speech and occupational therapy first.

I am so happy that I decided to use Game Changer to help my child with her speech. Not only has she come so far in a short period of time, she seems to be learning something new each time she goes. I am so thankful for this choice, and for Melissa being such a wonderful therapist for her.
